How To Begin

If you have a 30-Day Permit OR a valid CA Teaching Credential, skip to Step 4
1) Collect your official transcripts showing the conferral of a 4-year degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.

2) Satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement
  • There are several ways you can satisfy this requirement: List of Acceptable Documents
  • You must mail these scores via US mail to 6401 Linda Vista Road, Room 104, San Diego, CA 92111 or drop them off at the San Diego County Office of Education front gate to apply for your credential or permit.
  • Most often, candidates submit CBEST scores to satisfy this requirement. If you are interested in taking the CBEST (California Basic Education Skills Test), please click here: CBEST Testing Information

3) Apply for credential or permit. Please click HERE for information on how to apply for your 30-Day Emergency Sub Permit or your Teaching Credential.
4) Fingerprint Clearance - There are TWO types of prints every applicant needs to have on file: San Diego County Clearinghouse prints, and Commission on Teacher Credentialing prints.
  • If you are applying for a credential or permit for the first time, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires fingerprint clearance to be able to issue your document. Print and fill out two copies of this form: 41-LS Fingerprint Form
  • All candidates in our pool will also need to have their fingerprints in the San Diego County Clearinghouse database. Print and fill out two copies of this form: Clearinghouse Form.
  • To find a location to get your fingerprints done, please click HERE.
  • Be sure to call the location prior to getting your prints done to verify the rolling fee cost and the methods of payment they accept. 41-LS prints cost $49 plus the rolling fee and Clearinghouse cost $32 plus the rolling fee.
  • If you think your prints might already be in the SD Clearinghouse database, please call the consortium coordinator at (858) 755-9301 x3678 to verify before getting them done again.

5) Complete Tuberculosis testing (Locations). We honor TB results that are dated within the past four years.
